* * * SPECIAL NEEDS DOG * * *
SISSY is a sweet three-year-old black and white girl with a terrific personality and a sense of humor!
She gets along fabulously with cats and other IGs. She is petite, so a household with small non-aggressive pets is needed. Because of her spinning, she would be best in a home without small children. She is pretty active when playing in the yard with the other IGs in her foster home.
Sissy has health issues that are not fixable, but can be managed. She has a condition called megaesophagus with low motility, and is a spinner. Both are due to what seems to be congenital neurological problems. Despite the spinning and the "megaE," Sissy lives a very good quality of life. She takes daily medications; one is a compound drug that a vet needs to prescribe to a compounding pharmacy, and she takes Nexium (or prilosec OTC can be substituted) once a day. There are special feeding directions with the compound drug meal (a.m.).
As a result of the megaE, Sissy must be held in an upright/sitting position for 15-20 minutes after eating, and for 2-3 minutes after drinking water so that gravity will help the food and water go down, and minimize the risk of getting aspiration pneumonia (AP). She does get AP occasionally, and will need to see a vet and get antibiotics when this occurs. She will come with a stethescope that is used to listen to her lungs for any sign of breathing issues that need vetting.
Sissy is happy and as healthy as she can be with her ailment. She will take patience, time, stability, and frequent vetting. The family will need to have a very close relationship to their vet. Dogs with MegaE do not live as long as healthy dogs, but can live good quality lives for several years.
Sissy is located in Indiana and will be adopted within the state or to surrounding states. Family will need to reside w/i 150 mile radius of Fort Wayne. Her foster family will gladly babysit if ever needed, as she is a very special girl and has grown quite attached to the foster family and vice-versa.
